The State of AI Visibility

We measured 150 established companies across six industries the way their buyers now find them: by asking ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity the question each category exists to answer. Then we audited the structure of every company in the sample against a 50-point framework.

The finding that reframes everything: the companies that are visible today are structurally identical to the companies that are invisible. Nobody has engineered their position yet. Every category's seat is still open.

The Five Findings

  1. 1 in 7

    Finding 01

established companies is invisible in AI answers

Across 150 funded, actively marketed companies, 14.7 percent were named by zero of three AI systems when asked the buying question their category exists to answer. 54 percent were missing from at least one major system. Invisibility at this layer produces no signal: no bounce rate, no ranking drop, no alert. The competitor gets recommended and the buyer never knew the company existed.

  2. 24%

    Finding 02

of SEO and marketing agencies were named by nothing

The most invisible industry in the study was marketing itself. SEO and marketing agencies posted the worst presence numbers of any sector measured, worse than the AI search software category. The average agency appeared in just 1.3 of 3 answers to the exact question their own prospects are asking.

  3. 21.7 vs 21.5

    Finding 03

structural scores of visible companies versus invisible ones

Companies named by all three systems averaged 21.7 of 50 on the structural audit. Companies named by none averaged 21.5. The scores are statistically identical. Nobody engineered their position. Today's AI visibility is running on borrowed authority from the old web, which means every category's seat is still open. Not one company in 150 reached the top readiness band. The highest score was 39 of 50.

  4. 15 to 26%

    Finding 04

is all the top five brands capture in any industry

Across 4,436 organization mentions extracted from 450 live AI answers, the top five most-named brands in each of the six industries captured only 15 to 26 percent of all mentions. The strongest single position in the entire dataset was 7.6 percent of category mentions. In classic search, position one can take a third of all clicks. In AI answers, nobody holds anything close. Category leadership is not held. It is available.

  5. 94%

    Finding 05

publish no machine-readable identity for their founder or operator

The strongest structural pillar across the sample was content organization: Knowledge Index averaged 7.4 of 10, evidence that a decade of content marketing produced volume. The weakest were the layers that let a machine resolve who the company is and corroborate it. Of the sites that returned machine-readable content, 94 percent publish no machine-readable identity for their founder or operator, 84 percent have no question-and-answer formatted content in their core topic, 81 percent do not list their products under consistent canonical names, and 61 percent never state their entity relationships. The market has been writing for an interface that no longer reads the way it writes.

The Industry Scorecard

Every industry, measured on both layers. Structural score is the average of the 50-point audit. Invisible is the share of companies named by zero AI systems. Named-in is the average number of the three systems that named a company.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is The State of AI Visibility?

Original research published by JONOMOR LLC in July 2026. It measures 150 established companies across six industries two ways at once: their live presence in ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity answers, and a 50-point structural audit of each website. The dataset covers 450 live answers, 4,436 organization mentions, and a full structural score for every company.

  • How many established companies are invisible in AI answers?

One in seven. 14.7 percent of the 150 established companies were named by zero of three AI systems when asked the buying question their category exists to answer. 54 percent were missing from at least one system.

  • Which industry performed worst?

SEO and marketing agencies. 24 percent were named by zero AI systems, and the average agency appeared in only 1.3 of 3 answers. This was the worst presence of any industry measured, including the AI search software category itself.

  • Does good website structure predict AI visibility?

Not today. Companies named by all three systems averaged 21.7 of 50 on the structural audit. Companies named by none averaged 21.5. The scores are statistically identical, which indicates current AI visibility is inherited from legacy web authority rather than engineered. Not one of the 150 companies reached the top readiness band; the highest score was 39 of 50.
