What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? How It Relates to AEO

By Ali Morgan, Founder and AI Visibility Architect at Jonomor

GEO is the practice of shaping how AI systems construct and present answers about your organization, products, and domain expertise. If Answer Engine Optimization ensures retrieval, then Generative Engine Optimization influences description, contextualization, and recommendation.

The two disciplines are not interchangeable. They operate at different layers of the AI retrieval pipeline.

The Three Layers of AI Retrieval

Understanding GEO requires understanding its position relative to SEO and AEO. Jonomor defines three distinct optimization layers.

Layer 1: Document Retrieval (SEO)

Traditional SEO. It targets document ranking. Signals: backlinks, keywords, page speed, and domain authority. Output: a ranked position.

Layer 2: Entity Retrieval (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimization. It targets whether AI systems can identify, contextualize, and cite you. Signals: entity clarity, schema architecture, topic cluster depth, and cross-domain corroboration. Output: your entity is retrieved as a candidate source.

Layer 3: Generative Shaping (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization. It targets how AI systems describe and present you after retrieval. Signals: content framing, taxonomy precision, competitive differentiation language, and brand context. Output: the AI describes your entity accurately, favorably, and in your own terminology.

Why GEO Without AEO Fails

You cannot skip to GEO without AEO. If an entity is not retrievable, there is nothing to shape.

The common agency mistake is focusing on content framing without first verifying entity architecture, schema, and corroboration. The result is well-framed content that AI engines never retrieve.

How GEO Works in Practice

GEO ensures AI systems use your terminology rather than generic language. That means embedding competitive differentiation in the corpora the models draw on and structuring content so the entity is placed in the correct context: category leader, specialist, or originator.

GEO also extends to monitoring. AI answers can carry inaccuracies or unfavorable framing pulled from low-quality sources, so the discipline includes systematic verification and corrective action.

Jonomor's position: AEO and GEO are complementary, not competing. Jonomor has filed USPTO trademarks for Answer Engine Optimization (Serial 99/766,713) and AEO/GEO BY JONOMOR (Serial 99/781,568), and the methodology is documented in the AI Visibility Framework.

Where Most Organizations Stand Today

Based on the 150-domain analysis in the State of AI Visibility report, the majority have not established Layer 2 (AEO). They optimize for Layer 1 (SEO) and attempt to jump to Layer 3 (GEO) without entity architecture. The starting point is an assessment across all three layers, which the AI Visibility Scorer provides.
