How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: What AI Answer Engines Actually Retrieve

By Ali Morgan, Founder and AI Visibility Architect at Jonomor

When a user asks ChatGPT to recommend a company, compare products, or explain a concept, the system does not generate its answer from nothing. It retrieves from a corpus. The question every organization should ask is not "How do I rank higher?" but "Am I in the corpus at all?"

Getting cited by ChatGPT, or by Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, or Google AI Overviews, requires a fundamentally different approach than ranking on Google.

ChatGPT Uses Two Retrieval Mechanisms

The first mechanism is training data: a pre-indexed corpus of text that includes web content, publications, and structured knowledge. This gives the model its baseline awareness of an entity.

The second is live search retrieval: the browsing capability that performs real-time web search and synthesizes the results. This is where SEO and AI visibility intersect.

Both channels prioritize entity authority. ChatGPT gravitates toward entities that are clearly defined, widely corroborated, and topically deep. For a fuller picture of how these engines work, see what Answer Engine Optimization is.

The Five Requirements for AI Citation

  1. 1

Your entity must be unambiguously defined.

Consistent naming, Organization and Person schema, and a clear canonical identity. Multiple name variations reduce the system's confidence.

  2. 2

Your content must demonstrate topical authority.

Pillar content, supporting articles, definition pages, and structured relationships. The content architecture mirrors how an expert organizes knowledge.

  3. 3

Your structured data must be machine-readable.

JSON-LD schema (Organization, Person, WebSite, TechArticle, FAQPage) supplies a machine-readable entity relationship layer. Without it, the AI infers your identity from unstructured text.

  4. 4

Independent sources must corroborate your claims.

This is the hardest requirement. ChatGPT deprioritizes self-published content. Press, industry publications, expert platforms, and directories must mention the entity independently.

  5. 5

Your entity must appear in the right retrieval contexts.

It must exist in the corpus that answers category queries: the listicles, directories, and industry articles that ChatGPT searches.

The pattern Jonomor documented across 150 domains: high Google rankings paired with low third-party corroboration fail AI retrieval. Moderate Google rankings paired with strong entity architecture and third-party mentions appear in AI answers. The retrieval logic is different. What Most Companies Get Wrong

The most common mistake is assuming SEO success translates to AI citation. An organization can rank page one on Google and still score below 20 on the AI Visibility Framework.

The second mistake is treating AI visibility as a content-only problem. Publishing more articles does not fix entity clarity, missing schema, or absent third-party mentions. AI visibility is a systems problem, not a volume problem.
